What’s in my camera bag – Philipp Kirchhof

I am Philipp Kirchhof, known on Instagram as phippix, and I recently, as an April Fool’s joke, turned 35 years young.

Early on, I learned how to emphasize contrasts and stage subjects using pen and paper. At some point, I was allowed to hold my grandfather’s camera, a Konica T3, and “waste” my first roll of film. What fascinated me was that pen and paper suddenly existed only in my mind. I could now compose exactly what I actually saw: a dike with a flag waving in the North Sea wind.

That experience still shapes my photography today. I love being outdoors, whether on the streets or  traveling in nature. Nature does not exist only far from civilization. It is everywhere. That is exactly why I search for quiet, natural moments in the middle of vibrant life. In our busy everyday routines, we often pass them by. I capture these moments to share them with the world.

Colors feel alive to me and are especially reflected in my nature photography. I deliberately work with contrasts and enhance them during post-processing. Editing is an essential part of my creative process. It allows me to present the world as I perceive it.

At the same time, I am fascinated by black and white photography, which I mainly use in street photography. My grandfather already used it with his black and white film in the Konica T3. To me,  black and white photography feels like drawing. Aperture, shutter speed, and ISO replace pen and paper.

By now, my shelf is filled with lenses of various focal lengths, but not all of them fit into my bag.  That is why I intentionally limit myself to a maximum of two focal lengths when I am out shooting,  staying both flexible and minimal.

My equipment:

• Fujifilm X-M5 and Fujifilm X-E5

• Fujinon XF 23mm f 2.8 R WR

• Pocket Dispo Pro 28mm APS-C 42mm f 11 XF

• TTArtisan AF 27mm f 2.8 XF

• TTArtisan AF 56mm f 1.8 XF

• TTArtisan AF 35mm f 1.8 XF

• TTArtisan MF 17mm f 1.4 XF

• Viltrox AF 35mm f 1.7 XF Air

• Viltrox AF 9mm f 2.8 XF Air

But what is in my hip bag?

I almost always carry both of my Fujifilm cameras with me. The Fujifilm X-M5 is my everyday carry camera. It is compact, flexible, and perfect for quickly reacting to scenes and subjects. It usually sits in my hip bag or jacket pocket.

I take the Fujifilm X-E5 with me when I go out specifically to shoot. With it, I intentionally look for quiet moments on the streets. Its 40.2 megapixel sensor is ideal for capturing detailed images.

Compactness is also key when it comes to my lenses. My favorites are the Fujinon XF 23mm f 2.8  R WR and the TTArtisan AF 27mm f 2.8 XF. Both are perfect for nature and street scenes.

Since I like to switch lenses while I am out, my setup stays flexible. I do not need a large bag. My choice is a 4 liter hip bag from PGYTECH OneGo Solo2. It is discreet, compact, but surprisingly spacious.

I use it because it is unobtrusive in street photography, waterproof for rainy days, lightweight and adjustable in size so it can be worn as a hip bag or shoulder bag. It also impresses with its high-quality craftsmanship.

It fits two cameras, a power bank for my smartphone, spare batteries, a card reader, and my headphone case. Because without music, I simply cannot photograph.
